Amanda Brugel

Pointe Claire resides in a sleepy part of Montreal Island known as West Island. This West Island, to those who are unfamiliar with it, is a vast area that extends from Lachine until the west. Amanda Brugel's hometown is often referenced, however her brief visit to the West Island was not. Brugel grew in Courtice located just outside of Oshawa. She wanted to become professional, however due to a rapid growth spurt she outgrew every dance partner she met. In a recent interview with the Toronto Star, she confessed that "In heels I'm 6 feet, 1 inch." Once I was bigger than my male counterpart, I stopped. A lot of former dancers go on into acting. In Brugel's situation, it was a suggestion from a high school drama teacher which led her in the right direction. Her teacher advised her to audition to play the character of Anne for their school's annual production. The student tried it out, and was eventually cast as the role of the main character in Anne of Green Gables. She was awarded a Fine Arts Talent Scholarship to go to York University's Theatre Program which she completed in 2000 with a Bachelor's of Fine Arts. Over the last 20 years, Brugel's work has been seen on the small and large screen. She gained the most attention when she won her character of Rita on the award-winning TV show The Handmaid's Tale. Brugel made an appearance on only a handful of occasions in the first season of the series The Handmaid's tale. She was the sole Canadian actor.
